Jewelry care
How do I look after my opal jewelry?
Solid Australian opals are the hardest opals in the world, measuring 6.5 on the Mohs scale, but it is important to take care of the opal as it can be scratched and damaged.
Cleaning: Jewelry with solid opals can be cleaned with a toothbrush in lukewarm water with a little washing-up liquid, then dried with a soft cloth. Do not use silver cloths on the opal itself, as they contain polishing agents. The jewelry can also be cleaned ultrasonically, except for sand boulder opal. Sand boulder is more porous, so you need to be a little more careful with them.
Jewelry with doublet opals can be wiped with a damp cloth. Doublet opals are composite opals where a thin layer of opal is glued onto a background of another dark material. Therefore, it is important to take extra care of them so that they do not come into frequent contact with water.
Storage: When you are not wearing your opal jewelry, it is best to store it separately in a soft material (such as a jewelry box) away from other jewelry, as it can be scratched if stored with jewelry with sharp edges.
If you follow these simple recommendations, you can enjoy your gemstone for many years to come.
