Jewelry care

How do I look after my opal jewelry?

Solid Australian opals are the hardest opals in the world. They measure 6.5 on the Mohs scale, but it is important to take care of the opal as it can get scratched and can be damaged.

Cleaning: Jewelry with solid opals can be cleaned with a toothbrush in lukewarm water with a little washing-up liquid and then dry with a soft cloth. Do not use silver cloths on the opal itself, as they contain polishing agents. The jewelry can also be cleaned ultrasonically, with the exception of sand boulder opal. Sand boulders are more porous so you have to be a little more careful with them.

Jewelry with doublet opals can be wiped with a damp cloth. Doublet opals are composite opals. A thin layer of opal is glued onto a background of another dark material. Therefore, it is important to take extra care of it and not to let it come into contact with water often.

Storage: When you are not wearing your opal jewelry, it is best to store them separately in a soft material (e.g. jewelry box) away from other jewelry, as they can be scratched if stored together with jewelry with sharp edges.

If you follow these simple recommendations, you can enjoy your gemstone for many years to come.
